Better late than never: Volkswagen WE

By Editorial Team on July 12, 2018

With Daimler and BMW fusing their carsharing models in an attempt to dominate the field and remain competitive as upstarts such as Uber, LimeBike, Bird, Ovo, etc. eek out their own corner in the new mobility economy, VW has remained in the background.

This changes with their plans to launch a new carsharing model called WE, which will only be using electric vehicles. This service will launch in Germany in 2019, and then expand to major cities in Europe, North America and Asia from 2020 onwards.“We are convinced that the car sharing market still has potential. That is why we are entering this market with a holistic single-source concept covering all mobility needs from the short journey that takes just a few minutes to the long vacation trip. Our vehicle-on-demand fleets will consist entirely of electric cars, and will therefore provide zero-emission, sustainable mobility. That is an intelligent way to relieve the strain on urban areas”, Jürgen Stackmann explained.

Although initially focusing on cars, Volkswagen WE will expand to include scooters and other services. Volkswagen showed off two electric concepts in March: The e-scooter Streetmate and a somewhat strange-looking “street surfer” called Cityskater.
