Best of the Week – CW 40

By Editorial Team on October 5, 2018

Here’s a short summary of what happened in the world of mobility, logistics & transportation this week:

The Future is Nigh

The troika of future mobility consists of electric vehicles, on-demand mobility, and autonomous driving. China has been shifting the market into the next gear after they introduced a five-year plan in 2016. Since then, China has become the world’s largest EV market, thus pushing the automotive renaissance into hyperdrive?

Is Tesla Going to be Profitable Soon?

Tesla – a pioneer, visionary, rebel… Elon Musk and his company have stood for so many adjectives save for one: Being profitable. Since its foundation years ago, Tesla managed to disrupt the industry, but did not manage it to get out of the red. Looks like these times are set to be over soon.

First Hyperloop Full-Scale Passenger Capsule Presented

Back to the future! From Tesla to Hyperloop (another thing Elon Musk originally came up with). Hyperloop Transportation Technologies presented its first passenger capsule and thus offered a quick into the future. The Hyperloop would change the way of travelling around, with its capsules able to transport people with up to 1.200 km/h. A ride from L.A to San Francisco would take the future traveller only half an hour this way.

NASA-Tech for Ford

Yes, NASA and Ford are (somehow) cooperating. No, Ford does not plan its own moon mission. The car manufacturer and NASA signed a contract which allows Ford to use the space agency’s quantum computers (called QuAIL’s D-Wave 2000Q quantum annealer). Ford’s goal is to fuel and optimise its development of autonomous cars.

Islands are Becoming Smart

Electric vehicles, renewable energy, carsharing, a microgrid. Renault designs France’s first smart island. And it’s not just a vision somewhere in the future; Renault walks its talk. After the French car manufacturer helped to electrify the Portuguese islands Madeira and Porto Santo back in February, the island Belle-Île-en-Mer is in line to also become smart.
